They never mapped or named it, they really didn't even know where they were(north, south, east or west), never drew up any land deeds, never claimed it in their "nations" name(never had a written language to do so!), never built any roads, never built any cities etc. This land was never formally claimed for anyone and they were warring among themselves, just like they do in Africa(or America for that matter!).

Races differ widely just as there are differences in different breeds of the same animal like dogs(temperament, intelligence etc.). Races(and that is a valid term) differ greatly not only in physical appearance, but in abilities in sports, propensity to violence, ability in the classroom(mental ability that can be measured etc.).
