(written by Greg Graffin and Brett Gurewitz) Thought or thinking is a mental process that allows beings to model the world and to deal with it effectively according to their goals, plans, ends and desires. Words referring to similar concepts and processes include cognition, sentience, consciousness, idea, and imagination. Thinking involves the cerebral manipulation of information, as when we form concepts, engage in problem solving, reason and make decisions. Thinking is a higher cognitive function and the analysis of thinking processes is part of cognitive psychology. [edit] Aids to thinking Use of models, symbols, diagrams and pictures. Use of abstraction to simplify the effort of thinking. Use of metasyntactic variables to simplify the effort of naming. Use of iteration and recursion to converge on a concept. Limitation of attention to aid concentration and focus on a concept. Use of peace and quiet to aid concentration. Goal setting and goal revision. Simply letting the concept percolate in the subconscious, and waiting for the concept to re-surface. Talking with like-minded people. Resorting to communication with others, if this is allowed. Working backward from the goal. Desire for learning. Always be objective. Some parts by G. Graffin from the book 'is belief in God, good, bad or irrelevant? 'It seems that most people want to believe there is more meaning in the universe than actually exists. There is strong emotional drive to find meaning, wich may be "hard-wired" in our brains or a cultural universal found in all human societies perhaps. The drive leads many people to accept religion readily because theologies reassure us that indeed there is an ultimate meaning and an ultimate purpose to human life'. 'Human knowledge is created by a collective of workers in all sorts of fields. Neurobiology is one of the newer fields of inquiry. When we add the data to the wealth of data from psychology, evolutionary biology, molecular biology, medicine, etc. we are one step closer to answering the mystery of human life.' Greg Graffin; 'The intolerance of the Inquisition is, I believe, a natural outcome of traditional theology. History is the result of causes. Although we probably can't always figure out exactly what caused certain things to happen in history, we can examine some of the dominating factors' 'Did you know that my great grand-father, E.M. Zerr, wrote a multi-volume Bible commentary in the 1930s that is still in use in rural areas of the Midwest in a sect called Church of Christ?' 'My religion, wich is of course as yet undefined and totally unpopular, accepts morality as a set of prescribed rules that came not from an supernatural being and his mysterious wisdom, but rather came from a recognition of human behavior. We humans can recognize our own behavior and we can codify it. We are smart beings who can characterize good and bad behavior and relate it to how it makes us feel(good or bad).' 'The facts of naturalism are too powerful for people to ignore, but they haven't had time, or haven't had the need to think deeply about how that conflicts with the tenets and implications of traditional theology'

Mar 14, 2008 - (Greg Graffin) 'The difference between what's logical and what actually happens biologically is what seperates the philosopher and the biologist. Most biological phenomena are not logical. That is why theology lost thouch with biologists. What is logical about a dinosaur? Or a trilobite? Nothing. William Paley wanted to make nature logical. He is the father of "intelligent design". (from the book 'is belief in God, good, bad or irrelevant?)

Wildrogue Says:

Mar 16, 2008 - Greg Graffin for president! Fuck Obama, fuck Hilary, fuck McCain, fuck all the meaningless mindless people's heroes!

Jabtied269 Says:

Mar 20, 2008 - Get piss drunk and run naked outside waving a gun. Frightened citizens will call the police and scream "There's a naked person outside!!"

MicheasTheMighty Says:

Apr 25, 2008 - I don't know. Maybe if everyone had an epiphany of the desirability of human fraternity and peace? I don't think a change of man's nature can be sudden. It would need to be gradual and generational. We are repeating, as of 2008, the same mistakes of history. It's not because we're ignorant of history. We are very much conscious of history. Yet we are stubbornly trying to fit that square peg in a round hole. We can only hope future generations will vindicate us.

GermsOfPerfection Says:

May 8, 2008 - Nice Job mate! Too many people don't actually think before they die, they go on living their life, then get to retirement, and it's like "Shit, I've wasted my life" Find out what really makes you happy and pursue that! I bet it has something to do with friends and family, too!

NerdInHisShoe Says:

MicheasTheMighty Says:

Jun 22, 2008 - The God idea is a very tenacious concept that has been with us since our Stone Age era of primitivism. Observe how God resembles man and usually has in most religions except maybe Hinduism. If a race of supra-intelligent slugs were to evolve billions of years from now somewhere or other in the universe, their deities would probably resemble slugs. Religion is the self-deprecating man's feeble attempt at worshiping something without it having to be man itself out of guilt and shame.

OOverflowW Says:
