A Film by Paul Smaczny, Knowledge is the Beginning is the story of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra where young Arabs and Jews perform side by side. The film illustrates how prejudices are overcome during rehearsals, concerts and after-concert celebrations. It also demonstrates the problems that crop up occasionally and how music can help people from different points of view find common ground. For Daniel Barenboim, founder of the ensemble, the orchestra is a symbol for what could be achieved in the Middle East. This clip shows Mr. Barenboim accepting an award from the Wolf Foundation.

Jun 12, 2008 - I wish the five minutes of footage after this video were also included, because it shows the Chair of the Wolf Foundation - also the Israeli Minister for Education - blasting Barenboim for his attack against the state of Israel. It's ludicrous! If any one has it, kindly post?

May 17, 2008 - An amazing film clip! The world needs principled, courageous people, in the mold of Daniel Barenboim. (Barenboim's May 14, 2008 essay in "The Guardian" is an excellent companion piece to this clip.
