Jul 25, 2008 - Overall, what did this movie in, was the total lack of comic relief and the deadpan serious tone of the film. It was not 'dark' it was drab. I understand batman is a dark character and the tone is supposed to be 'noir' but the mood is so unrelentingly serious that toward the end it becomes comical. I mean, it's a guy who fights crime in a bat suit for god sakes, lighten up a little! I didn't want it to be campy, but the unrelentingly self-important tone was irritating.(con't)

Jul 25, 2008 - I am in total agreement with Ledger tho. His Joker kicked ass! I am a fan of Jack Nicolsons more goofy joker, but Ledgers more psycho joker was a totally fresh take and worth the praise. It made the movie for me, and I will watch it again just to see the Joker. I love the ideological struggle with him and batman, that was very compelling. To bead it was so burdened with the weight of the rest of the movie to be allowed full development. Good review man :) 5 stars.

Jul 25, 2008 - I beg your pardon.

Jul 25, 2008 - I only half-agree with your review. Yes, the action scenes left a bit to be desired, and I blame any "mediocrity" in Bale's performance to his extreme lack of screen time (he only got as much as some of the supporting cast)...but overall I felt it was still an excellent film. The plot was more of a psychological one; you're supposed to see Batman's internal struggles, and the dichotomy between him and the Joker. And I felt it was carried off well. (continued in my next reply)

Jul 25, 2008 - So I enjoyed the plot. Though there were a couple of plot holes and contrivances that I won't go into here. And Ledger was the star of the movie, hands down--not just because of his screen time, but because of his unbelievable performance. It's sad that he can't reprise the role. I don't think the CGI is worth bitching about--honestly, I didn't notice any flaws when I watched the film. Eckhart and Oldman were pretty damn good in my opinion, as well. (continued again, damn youtube)

Jul 25, 2008 - I liked how they showed the roots of Batman and Gordon's unique yet strong relationship, as well--it was like they lifted it straight from the comics, and they did an excellent job staying close to the continuity presented in the comics (with really only one obvious exception). So really, it was a thrilling and entertaining film, for me at least. Certainly the most gripping one I've seen since "The Departed", which you ought to see sometime if you haven't already.

BryanAJParry Says:

Jul 25, 2008 - Yes, I understand about the internal struggles etc. That is one of the reasons I was looking forward to this flick. Unfortunately, I don't think they did this very well. It was doen alright, for sure, but it wasn't done well enough to save the flick from general mediocrity, if you ask me. :)

BryanAJParry Says:

Jul 25, 2008 - The CGI on Eckhart was shockingly bad. It broke my willing suspension of disbelief almost as badly as that almost-first-scene where Dent (Eckhart) disarmed a thug in the courtroom. How lame was that? I thought for a sec that was a joke or a dream or something... it was ridiculous. However, Oldman and Eckhart were the best of all the players, bar Ledger, I agree. But frankly, I don't think either was as good as they good be. But yeh, they gave decent turns.

BryanAJParry Says:

Jul 25, 2008 - Why don't you watch El Orfanato, damnit??

reyazul1218 Says:

Jul 25, 2008 - The what?

BryanAJParry Says:

Jul 25, 2008 - It's a good film, blad. Just an off-the-cuff comment.

KMehrabi Says:

Jul 26, 2008 - :-O How can you not love this movie? I just saw it. One of my degrees was in film, and I'm ready to call this one of the best films of all time.

drevo666 Says:

Jul 26, 2008 - i am sorry for the fuck you ... i wrote ... i gave your video another chance ... i agree about two face ... it was bad CGI it made me feel i was watching spiderman 2 but still... a great movie great acting ... even harvey dent was good ... only two face sucked

BryanAJParry Says:

Jul 29, 2008 - 1of2 To be honest, I just don't understand why so many people are raving about the film. Just to make this clear, if it weren't already: Nolan is one of my fave directors (Memento is my fave film of all time!); Bale & Oldman are two of my favourite, most respected actors; Eckhart & Caine are of course wonderful; and I loved all the previous Batman films (including Begins). Therefore, I AM the kind of guy you'ld think would like this. But for me, they kinda missed the POINT of Batman.

BryanAJParry Says:

Jul 29, 2008 - 2of2 But, as I said in my "review", for me it is weak in many areas. Some are: 1. too much superman-style, Mission Impossible BS. 2. Uninspired performances from most of the players. Gyllenhaal was tedious beyond belief. But.. Eckhart was pretty good, and Oldman was alright. Ledger was dazzling. 3. Too many action scenes for the sake of it. 4. A plodding plot. 5. Irritating raspy Bat-voice that never shut up. 6. Superfluous characters (e.g. Freeman's). So, pretty much a letdown.

BryanAJParry Says:

Jul 29, 2008 - 3of2(lol!) For me Batmans a sad weird loner who stalks the streets & a crim himself. The police often leave him be cos he helps them usually. But essentially hes a man w/ no superfandango powers. Hes a freak who does't speak much & who stalks the night looking for thugs to beat up, and does PD work to avenge scum. And this is one reason why Ledger's Joker was so fantastic. His Joker really tapped into this core essence of the Batverse. The rest of the film just didn't "get it", so to speak.

BryanAJParry Says:

Jul 29, 2008 - Harvey Dent was pretty good, yeh. And Ledger was a joy. Really, truly wonderful. But for me, the rest of the film was a touch generic and a touch too Hollywood Superhero, for me.

BryanAJParry Says:

Jul 29, 2008 - I disagree completely. There's nothing wrong with a totally bleak Batfilm, or film generally. But I also disagree cos in fact there WERE MANY MANY light moments, often involving the Joker. Me and the rest of the cinema were oftimes rolling in the aisles (almost literally)at Ledger's brilliant Joker. Also, the problem with the film was that it DIDN'T have a noir feel. IMO, Batman is MEANT to be Noir. It was born during the Noir era. This film was more superhero, and far less noir.

BryanAJParry Says:

Jul 29, 2008 - I don't mind long films at all, but I agree: this film went on way too long.

BryanAJParry Says:

Jul 29, 2008 - Oh yeh, Nicholson's the maaaaaayun. Or whatever you wanna say ;) But Ledger is out-of-this-world good.

drevo666 Says:

Jul 29, 2008 - yeah i am a big film noir fan ... and i agree that the movie would gain on value if they played for with shadows and stuff like that ... but for a batman movie ... we got a good deal

KMehrabi Says:

Jul 30, 2008 - define "point of batman" because to me this is truer to the graphic novels than anything else. i think Christopher Nolan is doing a superior job. Its the first superhero franchise to embrace realist cinema - something I thought was impossible.

KMehrabi Says:

Jul 30, 2008 - I disagree with 1 more than anything. Its like night and day. How can you say that? For 6, you saw Batman Begins right?

KMehrabi Says:

Jul 30, 2008 - are you saying the film did not embrace this characterization of batman, or that it did and you have an issue with it doing so?
