Clips on Amy Dudley and her relationship with her husband who was Elizabeth I's infamous favourite. Amy Dudley, nee Robsart, was Robert Dudley's first wife, and they married on 4th June 1550. Whilst Robert prospered soon after the accession of Elizabeth, Amy remained away from court. At the time of her death she was living at Cumnor Place in Berkshire. Amy was found dead at the bottom of a staircase in the evening of the 8th September 1560. There was soon an investigation into the matter and the coroner's jury found that the death had been accidental. Allegations of suicide arose however this was strongly denied by her servants. There were persistent rumours that Amy had been murdered by her husband so he could be free to marry Elizabeth. However it is debatable whether Dudley would have done this as undoubtedly he would always be the prime suspect owing to his close relationship with another woman and so could not murder his wife and avoid any allegation. Dudley does not appear to have profited by Amy's death; is anything it added another obstacle to him marrying Elizabeth and if the pair ever married it would only confirm to many the idea that Dudley had murdered his wife. In 1956 a new theory was promoted by Ian Aird which suggested that Amy had been suffering from ill health and notes how one contemporary account noted how Amy suffered from a malady in one of her breasts. This could be a reference to breast cancer and Amy may have been extremely weary and in a fragile state and so accidently tripped and fallen whilst going down the stairs. However this theory does not take account of the fact that Amy was sufficiently well to travel around to different households prior to her death. It is very probable that Amy's death was an accident. Many who promoted the idea that she had been murdered had an agenda. However there appears to be little occasion for a planned attack on Amy to be carried out as she was constantly surrounded by household servants. According to Dudley's household officer, Thomas Blount, the absence of servants on the day of the incident was due to Amy's spontaneous instruction that the servants should go to a fair at Abingdon. When they came back they found her dead (and Blount at first believed Amy may have sent her servants away to commit suicide). But any potential murder would not have been assured as Amy's decision to be alone was a sudden instruction. Jul 26, 2008 - Poor Amy Dudley. If they had really kissed in with her ladies right there, I would think there would be accounts of it.

Jul 26, 2008 - Poor lady. I've read a book on her (well sort of) 'The Virgin's Lover' by Phillippa Greggory but she can't always be trusted for true facts. Though she did have the part where she spontaniously said for everyone to go to Abingdon for the fair. But she also says she was murdered. I think it is most likely an accident though but who will truly know.

Jul 26, 2008 - I tend to go for the accident theory. I doubt whether Dudley or Elizabeth would have been reckless enough to kill Amy and either believe they could get away with it. The other theory (that William Cecil orchestrated it to make Dudley so unpopular and prevent him marrying the queen) is interesting although this plan would have been highly risky and threatened not only Dudley's reputation, but Elizabeth's as well. Would Cecil potentially damage his queen's reputation? It's debatable...

Jul 26, 2008 - Poor girl. IMO she's very pretty and sweet. Dudley's treatment of her was awful. She was dying of breast cancer and all he does is flirt with the queen...

Jul 28, 2008 - yep - i agree with you, accident most likely, but was'nt there something weird about the way her skirts were so neatly laid???? if it was Cecil he must have been very desperate, but maybe he put all his faith and trust in Elizabeths instincts for survival??

Jul 28, 2008 - Is it just me or that servant that was crying to Amy when she died was laughing. At first I thought they were laughing instead of crying and sorry that I have to say this. But poor Amy, Robert could have treat her better.

LadyPerseverance Says:

Jul 29, 2008 - I have listened to that part many many times and it does sound unmistakingly like laughter. I'm thinking that maybe it was supposed to be a servant that hadn't discovered what happened and was still returning from the fair - maybe drunk? I don't know but I swear it sounds like someone cackling! Its all a very unfortunate situation, how poorly Amy was treated and also that the Queen's heart seemed to be trapped by a man she could never rightfully have. Thanks for posting!

littlemisssunnydale Says:

Jul 29, 2008 - You are both right - it is a laugh. The scene cuts to Mary Stuart laughing because she has just learnt the news of Amy Dudley's death. She finds the whole idea of Elizabeth potentially marrying Robert Dudley now his wife is gone, very amusing. Unfortunately I had to cut out the scene to get the video under 10 minutes. Silly YouTube restrictions!

Aug 24, 2008 - oh, could you post the clips on mary stuart? i d like to see her in bliss - . ) i like her sooo much!

germinator6 Says:

Aug 26, 2008 - She was never ill. Dudley only spread that rumor at court to make everyone think she was close to death so he would be less shamed by his love affair with Elizabeth.

germinator6 Says:

Aug 26, 2008 - However, fact says that her neck was disfigured and the stairs to short for it to have been an accident. There was also speculation that she commited suicide because she was grieving but honestly... could she have broken her own neck?
