OAKLAND, Calif. -- An Oakland DUI traffic stop turned deadly early Friday as a suspect died in an officer-involved shooting -- the third victim of gun violence on the city's troubled streets in a 12-hour span. Police Chief Wayne Tucker said the incident began about 4 a.m. when a police officers pursued what appeared to be a drunk driver. The officers broke off the chase, but then spotted the suspect driving southbound on Fruitvale Avenue and picked up the chase again. Tucker said the suspect then got out of his car and ran both northbound and eastbound on Fruitvale. At least one of the two officers involved in the incident then shot the suspect, who was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
