We always hear religious people trying to distance their God from the ugly bits of the bible, but also, often separating God from the Bible altogether, particularly when debating with scientists. I don't reckon you can do that and still claim to esteem the Bible as being the word of God. The debate I mention in the video can be found here, but be warned it's an hour long and the host loves the sound of his own voice. http://www.catholicradiointernational.com/heartofmatter.php Please enjoy and comment.

Jul 26, 2008 - Christine doctrine does not say God wrote the Bible, it says God inspired those who did. You can see the individual personalities of the various authors. The OT authors were often prophets sent to warn Israel of the dangers facing them and of imminet punishment. Thus the tone reflects that even if the words are true. Luke has a clinical approach, much like a physician. You can see Solomon's personality in particular. Whoever wrote Matthew grew up extremely devoutly Jewish.

Jul 26, 2008 - I would also note that giving an example of a debate with a Catholic is not representative. Catholics have never been as interested in individual members of their religion to be fixated on the Bible because they have priests who do that for them and instruct them weekly in confession. This tendancy goes back centuries. Protestants are more "keen" on the Bible and many sects often know it in much better detail. For a defense of the Bible, you should interact with a southern Bible-based church.

Jul 26, 2008 - The various books have different "targets" the author was sending it to. Mark sent his gospel to Greek speaking Christians, as he carefully explains the meaning of Aramaic and Hebrew words assuming his audience may not know them. Luke addressed his to a mixed audience of "new Christians" as he says so specifically in the first few verses. Matthew had a Jewish audience, as he talks of many things that would matter only to devout Jews. Paul's letters often address problems at particular churches.

Jul 27, 2008 - Catholic church 2000 years old who created the bible, southern-bible based church about a few centuries if that old. Also protestants are called protestants as all they did was protest against the church. I'm sorry but i don't believe god would wait 1500 or more years after his death to create a true church, it was the original one whom he founded. The catholic church.

ShaundalynChic Says:

Jul 27, 2008 - LOL. The Catholics didn't at all create the Bible. The one they use isn't even exactly the same as the protestants. God created the true church as shown in Acts on pentecost day. It has always existed since that time. What you know as the catholic church is just a bureaucracy that came out of Christianity being recognized as the national religion in Constantine's day, centuries after the church was created. Don't confuse bureaucracy with the church.

Aug 21, 2008 - Excellent commentary. Although not personally an atheist, I find their arguments against the texts and the Biblioaltry to be just what traditional religion needs. The problems is what tradition has turned the Bible into: the concept of the infallible Word of God (a very Jewish concept). People don´t usually discuss their dogma because dogma is by nature untenable. Good religious people a lot of times aren´t even worried about it or even believe it. They want to experience the and live better.

Aug 21, 2008 - There is some wisdom in the Bible; there is atrocity; the conception of God is horrendous; the punishment and reward system all atest to a very barbaric people who here and there had a glimpse of wisdom. Compare the Bible to the Tao Te King of Lao Tse. Compare Moses´ ethics to those of Confucius or Buddha. The Tao concept is clearly interesting: "The God (Tao) that can be named is not the true (Tao)." One has to cherry pick the Bible and not develop any creed system based on it.

Aug 21, 2008 - By the way: congratulations on your concise style regarding what the current debate is actually about. "Water down" is what the most intelligent believers do. For interesting concepts of God (can find on Internet): Read Chap 1 of Allan Kardec´s The Spirits´ Book. Also: Luis de Mattos Christian Rationalism (Chapter III - THE GREAT FOCUS. GODS AND RELIGIONS). The last book contains all the atheist arguments and was written in 1912). Greetings from Brazil, Rio de Janeiro. Good work!
