Jul 21, 2008 - I think those are OK, but they have to exactly parallel a concurrent Real-Life™ situation.... i'll ask [username] Prolefeed. He won't answer, but i love throwing randoms at him.

Jul 21, 2008 - mista, i agree i encounter that definition of civilisation quite often (among young apathetic people who don't care for precise definitions that is). but as soon as they hear the definitions of quinn or jensen, they start asking questions they never thought of, and after a while are filled with hope. well, some of them. i really think all the misunderstandings are due to the lack of a catchy title to the post-civilised model we all dream of.
mistaspot1 Says:
Jul 22, 2008 - it has nothing to to with apathetic people. i really dont see the link between my definition and apathy at all. my definition just portrays civilization as not so rigid and unchangeable. capitalism is not an absolutely integral part of civilization. you guys don't see that. communism and civilization are just as compatible, and communism (highly organized/industrialized) is not dependent on growth and exploitation. i might have a solution to that lack of a catchy title problem. all in good time.
pennilesscripple Says:
Jul 23, 2008 - mista if by 'you guys' you mean me i don't see that capitalism is an integral part of civilization--i've never said anything even remotely suggesting that civilizations have had all sorts of economic and political systems

Jul 23, 2008 - satisforried
FunnyDigestion Says:
Jul 24, 2008 - Um, Communism is TOTALLY dependent on growth and exploitation. Remember the Five Year Plans? Remember the Great leap forward, collective farming, gulags, sweatshops. massive propaganda, the once-upon-a-time Aral Sea, dead Lake Baikal, etc etc?
FunnyDigestion Says:
Jul 24, 2008 - Communism as we've seen it (except maybe-a-little-bit in Cuba) is ALL about centralization, order, control, even MORE than any capitalist Western country. Russia is the most phallocentric country in the world right now, because as an inheritance from Communist planning all they have are a bunch of big stupid machines and factories, no wilderness, barely any food, child prostitution, tons of violence, poverty.
pennilesscripple Says:
Jul 24, 2008 - great examples, fd thank you yes civilization comes in many forms but at its base its all about enslavement of the human soul and destruction of the natural world
mistaspot1 Says:
Jul 24, 2008 - FunnyDigestion, you just don't understand my contexts. That's pretty typical. You look at things a certain way, and you're unable to think of them any differently. I'm not talking about the historical incarnations of communism. If you're not able to think of communism as a set of ideas and not a set of actions, then I'm afraid we're not gonna be able to communicate. I never said anything about leaders. Don't assume I support communism with political leaders.
FunnyDigestion Says:
Jul 24, 2008 - Well yeah, it's really easy to say that your wispy little untouchable, airborne "set of ideas" is "compatible" with this or that, because no one can prove you wrong. Kinda like how late-night infomercials can say that their Diet Pills are "compatible" with Thrice-A-Day Big Macs and Zero Exercise. Until someone orders a batch, the Pills can claim whatever they want. And the handful of countries who've ordered Communism have gotten disasters, just as bad as any capitalist disaster.
FunnyDigestion Says:
Jul 24, 2008 - (By the way, the 'idea' of communism is to replace the bourgeoisie with a working-class Dictatorship. I think 'Dictatorship' probably lands in the area of exploitation.)
mistaspot1 Says:
Jul 24, 2008 - I never said anything about leaders. Don't assume I support communism with political leaders.
FunnyDigestion Says:
Jul 24, 2008 - Yeah, I don't even think that having a CITY is necessary for civilization. Cuz look at America; most people live in suburbs that don't have very high population densities, probably smaller than a lot of Medieval villages. The main thing, I think, is importation of the means to live. Not only food but water, energy, heat, etc. If you're squatting in a shack cooking hunted animals over a fire, you're effectively not living in civilization.
mistaspot1 Says:
Jul 24, 2008 - Yeah, but, we're right to want to establish equality again. Or am I wrong?
pennilesscripple Says:
Jul 24, 2008 - yes of course. but those suburbs support and are supported by cities. i live in the country, but i live in civilization, and my community is inextricably tied to a city-building culture even though there's not a city right here. yes importation of resources and hierarchy are two of the hallmarks of civilization. well if you are in that shack within a civilized society, and you are 'escaping,' i would argue that you are still in civilization. especially if you are alone.
FunnyDigestion Says:
Jul 24, 2008 - No, but you can't FORCE people to be equal, and FORCE is the basis of a dictatorship-- even if it's "just for a little while."
FunnyDigestion Says:
Jul 24, 2008 - That's true. Your life would still be defined by it.
mistaspot1 Says:
Jul 24, 2008 - Well, we gotta do something. What do you think should be done?
FunnyDigestion Says:
Jul 24, 2008 - I'll get back to you. Seriously! lol. I'm preoccupied, can't think much right now. I'm only getting these comments because I have to keep checking my email.
